The 10 Most Common Mistakes Business Owners Make

MISTAKE #1: Trying To Be Everything to Everyone
If you, as a small business owner, pitch your business as
being able to perform 10 different services, you send the
message that you either don't do any of them very well
or you subcontract everything out. Instead, learn to do
one thing very well. Become known for doing that one
thing.
If you do one thing well, people perceive you to be the
top of your niche and you can, therefore, charge more
for the added value you bring to the table. It also becomes
easier to market your services because you are focused
on reaching a specific market that is interested in that one
thing you offer.
In addition, you have a limited amount of time to stay on
top of new information in your field, so why not dedicate
that time to learning more about a specific topic/industry
rather than diluting your efforts across many different areas?
Develop a USP (Unique Selling Proposition) that sets you
apart from others in your field. Perhaps your unique selling
proposition is your turnaround time or your home-delivery
service. Domino's Pizza USP is their 30 minute delivery or it’s
free. How is what you are offering different than your
competitors? Why is a prospect going to choose to work
with you instead of another company?
Once you've developed a profitable business providing
this one specialty, then you can branch out to add one
more service that your current clients want. Repeat this
system, and you'll build an extremely profitable business.

and work on one at a time. Commit to yourself that you
won't work on the next one until the first one is either
up-and-running or you've completely dismissed it as being
undoable or unimportant.
If you focus on pursuing one idea at a time, you'll be able
to build a profitable empire, not a bunch of half-functional,
barely profitable programs, products, or businesses.
