MISTAKE #9: Running Your Business by the
Seat of Your Pants
It's so easy to get overwhelmed by the idea of writing a
business plan. It's made out to be so scary. And,
sometimes, it's difficult to put our vision into words.
Besides, we know it's going to change along the way,
so why not just run with the idea and see what happens?
Well, that is a more comfortable proposition, however, with
no sales plan, no big vision, no thought-out strategy, no
marketing plan, your business runs the risk of floundering
or growing into something you don't want it to be.
If you run out to the marketplace with a half-cooked
business strategy, you'll end up taking on work that
doesn't really fit into your ideal business. You'll accept
clients that are not quite the ones you want. And you'll
likely end up charging fees/prices that are not quite up
to par.
Take the time to create a vision for your business. This is
the big picture of how the business fits into your life and
what purpose it serves for you as an individual. The
vision includes exactly the type of work you want to do,
how you want to spend your days, how much money
you want to make, what kind of people you want to
have contact with within your work, etc.
From that vision, you can derive your business plan.
What products/services are you going to offer? What
do your sales goals need to be in order to generate your
desired income? What parts of your business are you
going to delegate? How are you going to market to
reach your ideal clients?

MISTAKE #10: Managing Your Business One Day at a Time
We all start out managing our businesses one day at a time.
That's the only way to do it until you determine exactly how
you're going to run your business, what you're going to offer,
who you're going to offer it to and how.
But after you establish these basics, it's important to
develop systems to manage the various aspects of your
business. Ideally, you should have systems for your sales
process, fulfillment process, and management processes.
These systems are what enable you to create a smooth-
running operation maximizing the use of your time and
revenue-production. They protect you from losing control
of the business when you start growing at a faster rate.
The sales system tracks every single thing that happens
with your clients from the moment they are introduced to
your company as a 'lead' until they are a full-fledged
ongoing client. That means, every client goes through
the same process, should receive the same materials,
should receive the same contacts and follow-ups, etc.
The fulfillment system tracks every single step your company
goes through in order to ensure the client receives the
service/product they paid for in the time they expect it.
It tracks them from decision to buy through product/service
delivery.
The management system ensures you handle all of your
operational functions. The bills are paid on time (or early,
for a discount). The accounts receivable are collected.
The marketing efforts are consistent and measured
for return on investment, etc.
In addition to systematizing your processes, it is beneficial
to automate any part of them that you can. That way, it
takes little if any human interaction to do some parts of
the system. This ensures consistency.
